Beaches - Biras Creek Resort in The British Virgin Islands

Biras Creek Resort in The British Virgin Islands.

I have wanted to stay at Biras Creek for what seems like forever, well at least since I read about it in a travel magazine, possibly twenty years ago.
Now I’ve had the chance to stay at Biras Creek, I’m not disappointed. It was everything I’d hoped it would be. It’s not often a resort lives up to the brochure!!
Firstly, and most importantly Biras Creek looked just like all the pictures in the brochure and website.

Although the resort was full we never saw nor heard our neighbors because each suite was in a duplex and was very secluded, with fantastic views. The bedroom was air-conditioned, and there was two complimentary robes and a selection of drinks in our refrigerator. Outside we found two bicycles for getting around the resort.

We both thought that the meals were excellent.
Breakfast started at 8:00 am, lunch at 1:00 pm and dinner at 7:00 pm.
We took the buffet lunch on the beach most of the time, and dinner featured a menu that changed daily with several appetizer and entrée choices. The best part of the evening apart from the food, were the fantastic sunsets at the bar before dinner.

We meant to relax, a good book, and a glass of beer was all we really wanted, but if you choose to be energetic, the resort had numerous activities available. You were able to talk to a member of staff in the restaurant each morning, to help you with tours, diving or reserve a Boston Whaler dinghy to run about the North Sound.
There were lots of nice secluded beaches, and several had good snorkeling. If you wanted, then the staff will pack a lunch to take with you if you let them know the night before. You can even take a beginners diving course in the pool, and then go out and do a proper dive over a reef..

If you like walking, there are hiking trails, one of which ends up at the Bitter End Yacht Club, where you can quench your thirst.

For those who like watersports on the beach there were several rafts, hobie cats, sunfish, windsurfers and kayaks, and best of all an instructor to help you.
Whether you stayed on the beach, or went hiking, nowhere was crowded, and it was always hard to believe the Resort was full when we were there.
If you needed civilization there was also a shuttle boat that can take you to main road to meet a taxi or pick up a rental car.

When it was time to go we were sad to leave, and would definitely return.

Beaches - Girlfriend Getaways ??” Please, not another Spa weekend!

We’ve all done things that should definitely stay in Las Vegas, we’ve maxed out our credit cards on 5th Avenue, we’ve enjoyed one too many margaritas in Baja Mexico and we’ve been primped and pampered at the spas of Palm Springs. Really girls, isn’t it about time we started to think outside the box when it comes to getting away from it all with our gal pals? Well, it seems that more and more of us are doing exactly that!

Women in increasing numbers are looking to travel to new and exotic locations to experience innovative and exciting activities. Travel companies and vacation websites are offering all kinds of new trips to women that are packed with adventure and certainly differ from the norm - from cooking in Mexico to hiking in Montana, from skiing in Canada to kayaking in South America. It seems that more women are departing from the traditional spa breaks and shipping trips and are willing to try something new.

One of the best of these “girlfriend getaways” is the Surf Diva Costa Rica Surf Adventure, an all-gals surf trip to the tropical jungles of Central America, which includes accommodation near the beach, an expert surf instructor and guide, yoga workshops, massage and superb surf!

The Surf Diva Surf School was originally established in La Jolla, California, more than ten years ago as the world’s first surf school for women, so the Divas have heaps of experience in creating surf programs that are specially geared towards us gals. Owned and run by women, Surf Diva launched its Costa Rica program in 2004. Surf Diva owners and sisters Izzy and Coco had traveled extensively the country and fell in love with Costa Rica for its surf, its welcoming people and its sheer natural beauty.

As a surf destination, more women are traveling to Costa Rica, because it offers a variety of surf breaks for all levels, relatively uncrowded waves, and a gorgeous setting. Costa Rica is also a safer destination than most countries in Central or South America for women traveling in groups or alone due to low crime rates and friendly locals.

Surf Diva offers packages to girls of all levels, which is perfect for novices and more experienced surfers alike. With more women traveling alone, surf camps like Surf Diva’s Surf Camp offer a safe haven with fun activities, opportunities to meet other like-minded women and skilled guides/instructors with local knowledge of the surf conditions, tides, swell directions and wind habits. Besides helping women score the best surf, instructors have insider info on everything from the best season to watch the baby turtles hatch to where the spicy salsa dancing is going on that night.

The Surf Diva Costa Rica Surf Adventure is located in a small, traditional Tico village on the Nicoya Peninsula. The area is one of Costa Rica’s best kept secrets. The surf spot and hotel are located about 250 kilometers from the capital, San Jose. Because of the poor roads in this area, this piece of tropical paradise is off the beaten track for tourists, so it never gets too crowded. The area has a very low-key, laid-back feel. There are no huge hotels to spoil the peace and quiet. Most restaurants, bars and hotels are small, privately owned affairs with a real traditional Costa Rican feel.

A typical day at the Surf Diva Costa Rica Surf Adventure starts with a light breakfast of coffee, juice and fresh, local fruit. Then it’s time for the first surf of the day. The morning surf session usually lasts for about two hours. After a refreshing morning, it’s back to the hotel for brunch. Many campers choose to spend the next couple of hours sitting by the pool, strolling on the beach or reading a good book, but there are plenty of other activities available in the local area and the camp directors often give advice on great activities and things to see and do like horseback riding, canopy tours and jungle walks. All Divas kick off the afternoon with a daily yoga session and stretch, which is great preparation for the afternoon surf. After the afternoon session, everyone returns to the hotel, showers off and gets ready for dinner. There are many great restaurants to sample and the nightlife is low key and kicked back.

The weather in this part of Costa Rica is also perfect. The dry season lasts from late November to early August, making this an excellent time to visit. After the rainy season, which is especially heavy in September, October and early November, the heavy rains turn the area into a tropical rain forest, making this a great destination for sun worshipers and nature-lovers.

The beaches on the Nicoya Peninsula are equally breathtaking. The secret surf spot, where the Surf Diva Costa Rica Adventure is located, is a 6km expanse of white sand. The surf is perfect for surfers of all levels, from beginners to more advanced wave riders with consistent waves and both left and right-hand breaks.

Costa Rica boasts some of the finest coastline and most beautiful scenery on the planet. This country is Mother Earth at her absolute best. The nation’s environmental policies serve to strictly protect the natural habitat, so Costa Rica is perfect for nature lovers. We could all learn from Costa Rican’s enlightened attitude towards the environment!

“Pura Vida” or “Pure Life” is the best way to sum up everything that Costa Rica has to offer. You’ll hear everyone say it. Costa Ricans embrace the idea of Pura Vida in the way they live their lives. It’s a simple phrase that seems to capture the essence of what to expect from a vacation in Costa Rica - friendly and welcoming people, an experience of nature in its purest form, peace and serenity, beautiful scenery and an ocean that just begs to be surfed.

So, whether you’re a surfer, a nature lover, a beach bum, an adventurer, or even if you just want to chill out and soak up the atmosphere, it doesn’t get any better than Costa Rica.

A brief Virgin Gorda vacationers guide describing a few of the islands highlights. Virgin Gorda is part of the British Virgin Islands in the British West Indies, as one of about 60 islands in the BVI, mostly uninhabited. As the third largest island in the BVI, Virgin Gorda has around eight square miles of land area as it’s 10 miles long by about 2 miles wide with around 1,400 permanent residents. Christopher Columbus must have thought that it resembled a robust woman recling as he named it fat virgin along with the whole island chain named for Saint Ursula and her 11,000 virgin followers. A great majority of the vacationers go to the Caribbean for the beaches and on Virgin Gorda, arguably the best beach to be found is at The Baths. Here you will find giant boulders that were once liquid deposits of magma and due to the erosion of surrounding earth are now stacked in ways to create grottos and caves providing endless entertainment for beachgoers. Some of the other beaches on Virgin Gorda are Devil’s Bay National Park that is about a twenty minute walk from The Baths and is pleasantly secluded. Spring Bay, like The Baths, has large boulders scattered about and a very nice beach called The Crawl that is welcoming to families and children due to it’s placidity. Not far from Spring Bay is Trunk Bay that has a great beach facing west that is accessible by water or via a path from Spring Bay. Savannah Bay provides a sandy beach north of the yacht harbor and of course, not to be neglected is Mahoe Bay with a curving beach and beautiful blue water. The BVI is renowned for excellent sailing conditions as well as dive sites that range from 15 to 80 feet and many areas have no appreciable current and is ideal for photographers. This area of the Caribbean doesn’t have any extreme drop off’s but it does have plenty of coral gardens and topographical variation to include canyons, tunnels, caverns, grottos, and wrecks. With the ambient ocean temperature at around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, the flora and fauna is prolific to say the least and divers won’t lack for activities. The northern side of Virgin Gorda is mountainous, with Gorda Peak as the highest spot on the island reaching 1,370 feet enclosed by the Gorda Peak National Park. A lookout tower at the summit offers an excellent view of North Sound and Anegada as well as the land snaking it’s way to the southern end of the isle as well as other islands with their heads above the waves. Hikers may wish to consider excursions around the northern spine of the island to enjoy the views and semi-arid terrain.
